So I haven't given this blog any love for a while. It's just too easy to update Facebook and Twitter at the same time, so I apologize for that.

The good news is that my new film, Bricks of War, will be out on my youtube channel this Sunday along with a bonus video.

There will be an announcement about Battle of the Brick shortly and all of your fears and worries and questions about its release will be answered. I appreciate the patience of the fans who have stuck around this long. I realize how un-bearable the wait must be.

So, here's the news:

I'm just finishing up placing all of the sound FX in, and my friend in California just got done with a movie shoot, so he's going to have a lot of time to help finish up the special FX. Here's the short video I put together as I finish up Battle of the Brick. I made this to highlight how heated gamers get, defending their console. It's ironic cause all consoles have their good and bad points. If I didn't like x-box, why would I own a 360 and original xbox?

P.S., the controller in the vid was already very broken. So yeah....wouldn't waste 40 bucks on that.

Comparison Exposures

Here's a recent exposure comparison I did for myself. The tricky part is getting as many figures in focus as possible. This usually requires a long exposure, or putting the ISO up as much as possible. Check out the shots for yourself. I usually use the last one the most, which gets more of the figs in focus. Also...these #'s aren't final. I change the settings all the time.

P.S...all shot on my Canon Digital Rebel XTi with a wide angle lens.

Forgot to plug my camera battery in, but I'm ready to shoot the next scene. I guess I'll be productive on my blog here instead.

Animating vehicles is a lot more fun than animating the figures. There's only so many points of articulation, and when you move the vehicle forward the wheels move themselves. It's practically animating itself. I wish I could show you all the footage I shot yesterday. You'd love it.

Blomkamp Shots

So, if you want a simple POV shot in real life, reason says to just mount the camera onto whatever you want to shoot. So, you strap the camera on the helmet of an actor or the body of a car and just say action.

However, the process in animation is much more difficult. A simple POV shot requires you to build an entirely new rig from scratch and hope to your diety of choice that it doesn't fall apart in the middle of a shot. That's what we've got right here. Thankfully, the shot came out beautifully as you can see, but it looks even better in motion.

So, it's very tough to work with a Digital SLR camera in the confines of an actual diorama. It's very hard to get the shot I want sometimes, because some of the set pieces are permanent and can't be moved out of the way. I try my hardest to come up with jerry-rigged solutions to some of these problems, but they usually end up being precarious and scary when you look at them.

Wow, so it's been a while since I've posted anything. I'm gonna get this thing back on the road. Regular updates on Twitter and this blog about the productions.

First, Battle of the Brick is almost done filming! Can you believe it? I have one more hump to go and then it'll be post production from there. The production is well under way, and I'm just going though the storyboard of my crude hand-drawn index cards and knocking off shots one by one. Take a look! Don't worry...even if you could see it clearly you wouldn't understand my scribbles.

Bought a new iMac off a friend. If the harddrive continues to work, this will mean I can render things like normal people! I needed this to run After FX and Final Cut Studio 2 since those are my main workhorse programs. But now, I can render 2wice as much Battle of the Brick footage as normal.!!

I hope I have some Starcraft fans out there because my next film for Machinima will be a last hurrah for the original game. It chronicles everything you love about Starcraft into Lego, and even though it'll be another short film, I'm sure you'll all love it. Expect it to make the front pages of all the gaming blogs again.

After returning from my somewhat cut-short hiking trip, it's time to get to work.

While organizing and creating a livable working area for myself, I've already started to finish some of my still-in production projects, and getting Kooberz Studios content out there to you as soon as possible. This site will start to look more and more like a production blog now, since my last creation was only my spoof on Geometry Wars.

For my followers, there will be new Lego tutorials and short films. The larger (more important) completion of Battle of the Brick is at the top of my priority list and I am doing everything in my power to release it asap. More regular updates coming.

This image of the first day of college has finally culminated into 4 years of life wasting classes...1 awesome girlfriend...thousands of dollars down the tubes...several lifelong friends...a few really bad experiences...even more awesome experiences...a hatred for cafeteria food and a few people...1 dead futon...introduction to strange substances...interesting roommate experiences...2 bigscreen TV's...the wearing of boxers...more debt than I've ever been in...a vague understanding of what film is...hatred of bad teachers...the love of great teachers...a few scars...one very used laptop...exposure to different viewpoints, even though they don't matter since we're all going to die from the 2036 meteor anyways...5 zombie plans...level 39 in Nazi Zombies...one ice storm...hundreds of dollars jipped from the commuter caf'e before they fixed the one-card system...and a lot of life experience that I'll just forget about when the aluminum in my deodorant gives me alzheimer's. What a run.

End of College---A new era is born

So it has finally come. I am about to graduate college and take the next step into the world of animation.

To all of the fans and few readers still reading this blog, I want to thank you for sticking with me. I have great news. Now that college is officially over, I will be able to dedicate a great deal of my time towards making entertaining vids for you all. Much of time time has been taken up by internship work and general college business. Just recieved copies of the UK only gaming magazine: Games Master. This zeene is way crazier than anything I've seen here in the states. The layout is packed with info, photo's and sort of looks like it was made for someone with ADHD. I think Gamepro needs to take a clue from these guys because the attention span of today's U.S. gamer is rapidly deteriorating.

The interview about me is above...including the goofy picture of me and all its glory. I love that they used the still of the Warthog crushing the yellow flower. I distincltly remember animating that saying, "no-one is going to see this, but it's so awesome!" I'm glad I was wrong. I hope I can reach out more to my UK fans, and maybe this will help. If any of you are reading this due to the article...thanks for visiting.

P.S.- the side project I've mentioned should be out this week if all goes according to plan.

In the meantime, I've been researching where I'm going to take my animation skills after college. The clip was filmed at Alex Kobz' home and he is the leading actor. First you see him being glad about a package he just got from the post.

Hey everybody. Thanks to German super-fan, Daniel V., the German interview has been roughly translated. It's not a perfect translation because he's only taken 3 years of English, but it's all I got so I declare it to be awesome! Here it is...

Max just emailed me the completed cut of the Lego Wii interview that we had last week. It sounds awesome, but I don't understand anything he's saying. Sigh...the struggles of being uni-lingual. German is such a cool language too. I tried French and Spanish in school and performed an epic fail...so I don't think I could really do much better with this one. Have you ever seen that deraccel commercial where there's a mother in a park and she realizes she lost her kid? Then she panics and looks around, but doesn't find him until she pulls out her hand-dandy child bracelet locator? Well, if you've ever had a mildly popular video begin to surface on the internet (or any content for that matter) you become a bit attached and proud of it, even if you say you aren't. So natturaly, when my Lego Wii video stopped playing and instead displayed a "this video is no longer available message," I began to panic. It was down for quite some time as I understand it, and this had never happened to one of my videos before. I thought it had been removed from the site----maybe Nintendo asked to have it taken down! But alas, my fears were quickly erased when I went onto the help forums and realized that it's just a generic message to indicate that the video is lagging/timing out. Whew. Just a small bump in the road...nothing major. The vid is back up and fine.

I'm going to be on the radio in Germany! Apparently, my Lego Wii video has gained so much foreign interest that Max Reeg, an author at the Mitteldscher Rundfunk radio station in Germany, has asked for an interview. Among the obvious questions about the Lego Wii, I'll be talking about who I am, what I do, and my new Lego projects/videos. More information as it comes. I'll let everyone know when the interview's up.

Well, seeing as I'm trying to tie everything together, I've updated my youtube page, mocpage, and this blog page to co-exist with one-another. First Impressions

I'll be blunt and quick to the point. My name is Alex Kobbs and I am an animator and Lego brick enthusiast. My college major is officially film, however I usually concentrate on animation. Stop-Motion is my specialty...used only for the power of good. I came to the worldwide internet scene in June 2007 when I revealed my Lego Wii video to the world. Originally made as my entry for the Nintendo Shortcuts video contest, this short 5 minute video gained more than 2.5 million views, and this number is still climbing today. My next major hit was the reveal of my Lego Zanzibar model ( a scale model of a multiplayer map from the Halo 2 video game, re-created entrely out of Lego bricks). The youtube video became one of the most circulated videos amongst gamers, appearing on major game-news sites such as Kotaku and earning it's spot on the front page of digg.com for a whole week. Today, I am currently going to college and honing my skills while reaching for my degree. When the summer rolls around, I'll finish work on my major Lego project that I've been working on for the last 6 years; a stop-motion short using Lego Spartans and the Lego Zanzibar diorama. I have a couple new projects up my sleeves that should excite Lego fans (and maybe some Starcraft fans) and I should be announcing these soon enough. I'm always looking for work, suggestions, and opportunities to network. Please feel free to contact me.
